TAMILLA WOODARD (USA) is a director, adapter and actor. Most recent work includes the development and direction of Saviana Stanescu’s Polanski Polanski (starring Grant Neale and produced by Nomad Theatricals) at HERE in NYC, PS122/SoloNOVA festival in New York City, Odeon Theatre in Bucharest, Sibiu International Theatre Festival, and TIFF International Festival, Cluj, in May/June 2011. This year she developed and directed the workshop performance of OVERCOMING SPEECHLESSNESS adapted from Alice Walker’s essay by the same name by adapter Dana Balicki for Culture Project’s Women Center Stage.
She has directed at HERE, The Actors Theatre of Louisville, PS122, DR 2, The Culture Project, Urban Stages, Dance Theatre Workshop, The Kitchen Theatre, Manhattan Class Company and for festivals around the US and internationally. Her work has won best of festival awards, audience favorite awards, "Top 20 shows to see" citations, New York Innovative Theatre nominations and critical acclaim in The New York Times, Variety and others. New Dramatists has honored her with The Charles Bowden Award and The League of Professional Theatre Women with the Josephine Abady Award.
Tamilla is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, former artistic director of the Yale Cabaret, alumnus of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab, Women’s Project leadership council and on the Board of Directors for TerraNOVA Collective.
As a member of the Internationalists she has directed DECOMPOSITION by Alfonso Carcamo at The Lark Playwrights Development Center and for The City Parks Theatre Festival SUMMERSTAGE, devised OH De Sea! a riff on Homer’s ODYSSEY with Kisha Takina Burgos, Shawn Randall, Sara Gregory and a company of 9 actors for the Odyssey Festival and staged readings for Around The World in 24 Hours and other Internationalists programing.
Tamilla is co-founder of LAUNCH, a development company for phenomenal solo artists and serves as an adjunct professor teaching solo performance at City College’s Center for Worker Education.
