AN INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE EXCHANGE
Featuring 8 diverse performers, NOwhere NOWhere is an exploration of what it means to be Asian in America. Through the universal language of art and theater, the evening of dance incorporates the ancient with the present. Through a series of interconnected dance pieces ranging from Butoh to contemporary, the performers are armed with movement, words, poetry, video, and music. Identity is reflected using ancient methods, and the audience is presented with perspectives on how to navigate Western and Eastern identity.

Ye Taik (Rangoon, Burma) went to the University of Computer Studies and Law School, Rangoon from which he graduated both in 2003 with a BC Technology and in 2005 with a honor of Law degree respectively. In 2006, he dropped his Master class in Law School, and founded underground organization with youth communities in a related field of art, theater and media. He then went into art field as a bohemian, satiric, organizer, social critic and contemporary theater artist. The first drama he produced and directed was a satiric theater piece called Youngsters' Dreams, in 2006. In 2007, he directed and performed in traditional satiric theater called “Ah_Nyeint” Show in Burma. He also participated in a film production and directing workshop and he made a short contemporary film, The Minus One, with a colleague at Alliance Francise de Rangoun, Burma. In 2008, Ye Taik performed Our Carrot, a piece inspired by Samuel Beckett at the International Contemporary Performance and Theater festival in Rangoon, Burma. He represented the Burmese artists at the Mekong ICT camp, and advocacy and freedom film production in Pattay, Thailand, in Feb 2008. Ye Taik now resides in Brooklyn, New York. At the time of the world refuges day and Burma Democratic leaders Aung San Suu Kyi birthday, he was performing, The Imagine, a contemporary theater, with International artists in United Nation Plaza, New York City in June 2009.Currently, he is studying Butoh in New York City. He is the first contemporary theater artist and Butoh dancer in Burma.
Azumi Oe (Kyoto, Japan) - Since arriving in New York, Azumi has received Butoh training from Vangeline, Katsura Kan and Ko Muroboshi. Recently she performed as a principal dancer of the Vangeline Theatre at Abrons Arts Center, The Kitchen, Theatre for New City, Judson Memorial Church, and Governors Island. She also regularly explores solo work at the New York Dance Qube. Azumi is excited to collaborate with other dancers, musicians, and any kind of artist, with the hope of growing as a creator.
Teerawat Mulvilai - "Kage" (Chaing Rai, Thailand)
Teerawat Mulvilai (known as Kage) is a versatile physical performer with training in diverse movement techniques such as Butoh, Top Ma Pab (Northern Thai Martial Art), Viewpoints, and modern dance.
In 1996, he was invited by Kamron Gunatilaka to be an actor and member of Crescent Moon Theatre. In 1999, he co-founded B-Floor Theatre, which brought together a diverse group of theatre artists whose aim was to focus on exploring and creating physical theatre work.
His commitment to this physical work also drew him to work with Katsura Kan , a renowned Butoh dancer, in several projects including Bhagavad Gita (performed in Bangkok, Corsica, and France in 2000), Medusa- Life Without Snakes (performed at the 2001 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and 2001Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre), and the Butoh Dance project in August 2004 (performed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the 8th International Youth Theatre Festival in Croatia).
In 2002, he was Artist in Residence with the Alliance Francaise of Bangkok, during which time he developed and directed a physical theatre piece entitled, Crying Century, which was widely acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.
In 2004, he participated in the Mae Khong Artists Residency in Cambodia where he was able to work with various artists fromthe Mae Khong region to produce Requiem, a video dance collaboration between painters, poets, dancers and choreographers.
In 2006, he was an Artist in Residence at the Taipei Artists Village, where he conducted interviews with Thai migrant workers in Taiwan. Teerawat created a solo performance piece, GODa Gardener, based on these experiences. In 2008, the Bangkok Theatre Network awarded GODa Gardener first place in the category of "Socially Conscious Theatre." In 2009, Teerawat will return to the Taipei Artists Village to interview the migrant workers he interviewed 3 years ago to ask them, "What has changed?" The findings of his research will be presented via documentary film and the creation of a new performance.
Teerawat is also the recipient of an Asian Cultural Council Fellowship to pursue research, training, and creative programs in the United States in 2009.
Than htay Maung (Pathein, Irrawaddy Division of Burma) studied at the State School of Fine Art, Yangon from 1980 to 1983. He entered in illustration painting world of literature magazines in 1981. He has exhibited about 30 group shows and two solo shows since July 2002. He started doing performance art in 2005 and did about 10 performance art group shows in Burma. He used to work for Layout designer at Moe Journal from 2006 to 2008 and since 1981, up to now had drawn a lot of illustrations and cover paintings in many various magazines and journals. He is currently living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U S A with his family and has done installation arts and paintings.
Chou Shu-Yi (Taipai, Taiwan) graduated from the Dance Department of National Taiwan University of Arts. He is a talented dancer and choreographer in Taiwan, using involves dance, theater, architectural spaces, images and body movements. He has been choreographing since 2003. His works were selected twice by National Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center 's "New Idea Dance Showcase". His solo work Street Lamp was selected by Cloud Gate 2's Seed Choreographer's Project and performed in the International Dance Conference in 2004. The same work, instructed by Dancer Lo Man-Fei, won the gold medal in the national dance competition organized by Council for Cultural Affairs. In 2005, he was given the premiere performance of his choreography Open Door for HORSE (http://horse.org.tw/), a dance group he c-founded with Wu-Kang Chen and Wei-Jia Su. In 2006, he was invited to be the guest performer of Cloud Gate 2 and was selected as Taiwan's representative in Asian Young choreographer's Project presenting his choreography 1875. In 2007, his work was invited by the 20th Anniversary of National Theater; he also choreographed and stage-designed for Scarecrow Contemporary Dance Company’s annual production; in the same year he was selected as residence artist in Taipei Artist Village. During his residency he collaborated with French sound artist Yannick Dauby and created the impromptu performance for sound and environment as part of the Digital Art Critic Prize program; invited by National Taiwan Museum. In 2008, Chou participated in premiere performance with Sheu Fang-yi’s 37art for Lafa Dance Company; he was also selected to the LO Man-Fei Dance Fund for 2008 Choreography Program. In 2009, Chou received an artist residency in New York from the Asian Cultural Council.
Ritusri Chaudhuri (India) Ritusri, one of the most talented young Kathak exponents with her versatile proficiency in the field of culture (as mentioned by the critics & journalists) is a student of Guru Ms. Madhumita Roy and Ms. Chetna Jalan in Kathak dance (both in traditional and contemporary) at Padatik Dance Centre, Kolkata. She has received the coveted Euro Swiss fellowship from Asian Caltural Council,Newyork(2008). She is an empanelled artiste of EZCC and ICCR. Also a recognized artist of SANGEET NATAK AKADEMI
Before joining Padatik Dance Centre, Ritusri, with her academic achievement in university education, bagged the titles of “Sangeet Ratna”(M. music in Kathak from Bangiyo Sangeet parishad), “Sangeet Bivakar”(B.music in Rabindra Nritya from Bangiyo Sangeet Parishad), “Sangeet Sree” (Sr. Diploma in vocal music), “Abritti Sree” (Sr. Diploma in recitation from Bangiyo Sangeet Parishad) and “Sangeet Visharad” (from Pracheen Kala Kendra,Chandigarh).
Almost in all competitions held in Kolkata (including Dover Lane Music Conference ’05), Howrah, Durgapur etc. she scored her notable ranks and thus collected handful of awards and testimonials.
Ritusri, exhibited her various dance performances as a soloist, duet and group performer almost on all of the stages of Kolkata. Her admirable participation in a number of prestigious kathak dance festivals all over the country (e.g. JHANSI KANPUR, DELHI, MUMBAI, BHUBANESWAR, KHARBELA, KHAJURAHO, PURI BEACH, CUTTACK,MANGALORE,CHENNAI,JAIPUR,JAMMU AND KASHMIR ) and also in abroad (THAILAND, SWITZERLAND, KUWAIT, USA, CANADA) went on adding new feathers to her crown in the midst of shower of honors and applause from her viewers.
Ritusri also earned a good name and fame while working with international choreographers like Mr. Gills Chuyen, Dr. Sun Oak Lee and others.
Apart from proving her technically sound and gracious style in Kathak and Contemporary Fusion Dance Ritusri manifested her versatility as a Reciter and Anchor in T.V., stage and All India Radio, Kolkata.
Presently she is preparing herself as a directorial fellow in the field of Choreography and Dance-Theatre and produced VASANA-the design of desire, MANAN-let our minds improvise, AAHVAHAN-the invocation of the space.
Ming (Taiwan): is a performer based in NYC. He studied butoh with Tadashi Endo, Akira kasai and Ko Murobushi.
